Malaga airport is only 8 kilometres from the regions capital city and perfectly connected with the whole of the Costa del Sol. Malaga airport is the doyen of Spanish airports. It was one of the original sites of the first ever Spanish airline route that was established in Spain in 1919. The route (undertaken by the French airline, Lignes Aeriennes Latécoère) travelled between Toulouse, Barcelona, Alicante, Malaga and Casablanca. Of the three Spanish airports along the route, only Malaga airport retains its original location, and recently celebrated its 84rd birthday. It is currently holds fourth position with regards total traffic within the whole network of Spanish airports. In 2004, the airport handled 12,046,283 passengers, a growth of 4.1 percent with respect to the year 2003. The airport is essentially tourist focused. It has flights to seventeen different Spanish cities, as well as flights to sixty European capitals including destinations to America, Asia and Africa. The tourist boom along the Costa del Sol has ensured that the airport itself has made constant improvements to its infrastructure thereby responding to passenger needs with an excellent quality airport. In 2001 the airport was awarded the European quality certification ISO 9001/2000 which guarantees rapid service and user satisfaction. Malaga, along with Santiago, was the first airport to achieve this certification. The standard covers aeronautical operations, the management of terminal operations and business, customer services and complaints management, airport security and the maintenance of equipment and installations. |
